Well, You Asked For It
Sep. 5th, 2006 04:14 pmOkay, so Melissa and John clarified the stance that Mother Earth cultist portrayed on PotterCast last week and that Global Warming is indeed debatable (I'll take whatever concessions they give, thank you), but that we (meaning those who actually know what we're talking about) shouldn't be afraid of engaging in political debate and giving a care about the world while we're obsessed with Harry Potter. Since I have heretofore not given my political views as they pertain to HP, but heaven knows I have them (especially after book 5), and now that they've been asked for, here's the run down:
In Book Five, power-hungry Fudge tries to discredit Dumbledore and Harry when they assert that there is a very real threat from Voldemort. He relies on the media hype and ... erm ... "credibility" to continue his tirade against Dumbledore. Meanwhile, Voldemort is gathering strength while the wizarding world turns a blind eye or simply debates the issue. Dolores Umbridge is sent to silence those who would speak the truth (read: Harry and friends), and though it looks like she is winning, in the end, she fails miserably. The best quote to sum all this up is after Harry is verbally attacked by Seamus and he thinks: "They'll know we're right in the end," though he also wonders when that time will come. The truth isn't known/widely accepted until Voldemort and the Death Eaters infiltrate the Ministry and give the wizarding world a big kick in the head into reality.
Now for the parallels: President Bush and Co. assert that there is a very real threat from Saddam Hussein and his terrorist buddies, which the power-hungry liberal Democrats retort that there isn't. The Dems rely heavily on the media to distort the public's view of the president and make him out to be this baby-killing, Upper Class idiot and only like-minded idiots would vote for him. The debate in the UN rages on and Saddam Hussein sits back and enjoys the show as his allies in France and Germany and other cookie crumb countries getting money from the UN undermine what the US is trying to do, which is getting rid of a substantial terrorist threat. Hollywood sends in its usual assortment of "We're Celebrities and We Know What We're Talking About" clowns to tell the American people that the president is going to kill us all and whatever other BS they're pulling out of monkeys' hind ends these days. Meanwhile, the terrorists are attacking innocent people in the Middle East, though we don't ever hear about that and the media beats things like Abu Ghirab to death on the 6:00 news. The majority of Americans who support the president take heart in knowing that the world will know we're right in the end and hope to all that is good and holy that it won't take a big kick in the head from the terrorists to get us there, but also knowing that's probably the only way to get everyone else's head screwed on right.
Do I sound bitter about this topic? Now do you know why I hate talking politics and my entertainment? I feel so strongly the way I do, but it's frustrating to me when people can't see what is staring them right in the face and choose to go with the popular opinions because it's the easy thing to do. It's easy to get on Yahoo! news by saying the president is a baby killer, but it's more right to look at the good he has done for the world during his term in office. The one story that endears him the most to me is right when President Bush got news of 9/11, he was visiting a classroom in an elementary school. When one of his aides told him what happened, he spent the rest of his scheduled time with the children before going to address the situation. He knows what's at stake and what's important and it isn't the oil economy and it's certainly not what France and the rest of the world thinks of us. Who gives a flying Dungbomb if "the rest of the world hates us" (TM)? President Bush is charged with protecting the American people and upholding the Constitution, no matter what, especially no matter what the opposing party does the undermine the situation.
God bless President Bush and God bless the USA (and God bless JK Rowling, not only for the message she has put out via Harry Potter, but also the escape it affords us who don't like discussing every waking moment of the day how the world is going to hell).
Now you have my views. Happy?
