Yes, You Can Win Them All
Feb. 9th, 2008 10:58 amDelta just finished their regular season last night with a win over North Sanpete. This means, with an undefeated record in region play, Delta takes the Region 8 title (actually, they had the region title sewed up on Wednesday by beating Juan Diego, but as Bill Belichick can tell you, it's much sweeter to win at the end). Overall, counting preseason as well, Delta owns a 19-2 record - the best 3A record in the state (even better than media-darlings Judge Memorial)
Sadly, Delta's playoff game is a week from today (who we play is still a mystery - we have to have a coin flip over who took fifth in Regions 10 and 11 and there seems to be a little contention over the results), which means last night was my last high school basketball game in quite some time and the last one I get to watch my brother play in ever T_T
But I have to say, those boys played one heck of a season. This is the first time in 30+ years that Delta has won a region title outright (they've tied for first a few times) and they deserve it. They've played hurt, they've played sick (we didn't find out until after the game, but my brother had a migraine the whole game last night yet he still kicked in 6 points, a handful of rebounds and some tough defense), they've played under taunts of "overrated" (which, that is crap) and teasing about the mascot (it's inevitable when you're the Rabbits - but I think it's made them tough. Kind of a like the song "A Boy Named Sue"), they've played games in which there was blatant favoritism against them on the part of the officials (that's not sour grapes. Even last night, there was a guy that must surely have been from Fairview or something. They're even lodging an official complaint, it was that bad) -- and yet these boys always showed up to compete. They even battled the 5A monster Bingham and only lost by 6 points -- tell me that doesn't take guts.
Whoever Delta plays next week, it'll be a great game and then it's off to the State Tournament (barring any unforeseen misfortune at the playoff game). They've made a great run and they've been awesome, but they've also been respectful and made themselves and their fans proud. They aren't cocky and there isn't "ONE BIG STAR" that has to hog all the attention. The boys are all friends and they all contribute and they all congratulate each other when they have good games. I'm really proud of them.
