... and if I didn't have to work, life would be wonderful. My
classes are Awesome! I've got Public Speaking, French 1020, Basic
Linguistics, Ethics in Biotechnology and Poetry Writing.
Public Speaking: Five three-minute speeches over the semester about whatever I want to talk about. It's a CI depth requirement, so it's fairly low-maintenance. Mostly it's busywork, but the professor seems pretty cool, for an old guy.
French 1020: I don't know if I'll be taking French after this semester. I have a graduate instructor and...eeesh. She's nice, but she only speaks French in class, unless the rest of us are freaking out, which doesn't happen very often, since I must be taking this class with all French majors or native speakers. Everything I learned last semester is completely gone. It's over. Screw the MA degree. Maybe I'll do the MFA at the U, who knows?
Basic Linguistics: *died and gone to heaven* Can you say incredibly wonderful? I'm insane, but this class is going to be worth getting up at 8:00 in the morning Tuesdays and Thursdays. It's just... linguistics. Need I say more?
Ethics in Biotechnology: Another Depth requirement for science. The first real lecture was a complete snooze-fest, but that was just because I've already had all this basic genetics in biology. There are two professors who teach this class. One does the Philosophy side and the other does the Animal, Dairy and Vet Science side. The Philosophy professor is just so energetic. Not to mention that I share the class with a sort-of friend from a few years ago and she is a riot on her own. This won't be so bad.
Poetry Writing: The one and only creative writing class I "could" get into this semester (Damn you, whoever schedules this stuff!). The rest were all at the same time. The professor has been away for the first week, so we had a substitute. So far, it's just been figuring out how to get ideas for poetry and how to revise poetry, which I never do much. I probably should. I've been looking over a lot my old stuff since I've started this class and they kind of... suck. (There's that stupid critic again). Poetry isn't exactly something you can learn, per se, but you can be exposed to other ideas. Plus, I haven't had much motivation to write, poetry or otherwise. I'm worried about myself a little bit.
What else? I'm in my IWA chapter presidency, so that's going to take up a lot of time. I've been working pretty much full time and I'm about ready to kill someone. It's going to calm down after this week, thankfully. Our Lead Editor is starting to a little... senile... and the Center Supervisor ('da big boss) had to make another Lead Editor (I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in that conversation). The new LE, Krista, finally got a concrete schedule for at least this week and I am not about to lose my mind. Under just Lynne, I would have been done with class and gone straight to Western Wats and had no time for anything else. We still need more people to edit (*stupid people who can't pass the editing test*), but things are getting better.
Well, I'm done. There's a basketball game tonight and I think we're going. Oh yeah, my roommates are great. We have a full apartment (*my utilities budget sighs relief*). One of them, Jessica, has seasons 2-4 of "24" and a bunch of CSI. I've been trying to get through the second season of 24 and may I just say that Jack Bauer is The Badass. That's all there is to say.
Love from,
Jenny Wildcat
