A Moment to Pause...
May. 29th, 2006 10:41 amWarning! Within lie spolierific-type-stuff for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. If you have been living under a rock for the past year and haven't read the book, proceed with caution. On the other hand, if you haven't read the book because you flat out don't care, forget that this red bolded stuff is here and enjoy the entry:
Yesterday, it was brought to my attention by the wonderfully wonderful Sue of LeakyNews.com that in the Harry Potter timeline was the anniversary of Professor Albus Dumbledore's death (visit hp-lexicon.org to verify that I am telling the truth). It's also interesting to note that the first time HP fans get to -- celebrate (for lack of a better word) -- Dumbledore's death is when it falls on Memorial Day in the US.
Now, putting on my Literary Theorist cap for a moment, I have drawn many parallels between the HP books and Life in the Real World as it stands today (I'm not going to go into it too heavily because not everyone agrees and I suck at debating). The one parallel that applies is this: Professor Dumbledore work tirelessly against Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters and others on the dark side in order to free the wizarding world from the evils and corruption and downright not-nice-ness that LV touted. In a way, he did the same thing that our troops today are doing. It is very fitting that we should pay respect to Dumbledore on the same day that we pay respect to the soldiers -- living and dead, past and present -- that fought and fight to keep us safe and happy in America, the greatest land EVER (I'll debate that with you until I am red, white and blue in the face and I won't lose!) Because of the soldiers, I am allowed to type up the blog and make my views heard and I can agree and/or disagree with anybody and they can do the same without fear that the government will swoop in and take me to a secluded room with torture devices like they do in other countries. I can go to school, I can work, I can come visit my family and chase the chickens into the chicken coop and all those other crazy things that I like to do.
So, today, Memorial Day, while I'm scarfing down hamburgers and chasing my cousins with the Nerf darts, my thoughts go to the troops -- from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War to the World Wars and to today's Iraq War -- and a great big heartfelt THANK YOU to every soldier who chose to fight, sacrificed and died for us. It's not a whole lot in comparison, but know that I mean it. Also, to the families: I don't know what it's like to have a loved one overseas in harm's way, but THANK YOU to you as well for your continued strength. My thoughts and prayers go with you all.
