Anything But Ordinary

Well, I did it.  I freaking did it.  I actually made a music video.  I've watched so many of these suckers and though "Man, I wish I could do something cool like that."  And I've finally done it.

This video is for the Doctor Who 2-parter "Human Nature"/"The Family of Blood."  (Here's my initial review of this episode - I swear, I thought I wrote more about it... meh, oh well...)  There are spoilers in the video, as well as under the cut after the video.

Well that's the video.  I loved making it and I hope you all loved watching it.  I've posted the crap out of it (on Facebook and on the [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho comm), so if you've seen it elsewhere... tough.  I have a newfound talent and I will pimp it out show off advertise to my heart's desire ^_^

I first got this idea when I was driving up for my class weekend a week or so ago.  I'd just finished watching this story and I was really hacked off about the whole thing because - quite frankly, it was weird for the Doctor to be completely and utterly helpless (not to mention absolute rubbish).  I hated that he'd left Martha to fend for herself and he just left everything up to her to fix.  Not that she's not completely capable of taking the reins, but that's not how it works! *stomps foot* The Doctor is THE FREAKING DOCTOR!  Normal human life? Bah!  What kind of fluffball wants that?  Get back to time-and-space travel, you nut! (keep in mind, this was my initial knee-jerk reaction to this story).

As I was driving the 3 hours north to Salt Lake, I was listening to my iPod and "Ordinary" by Train came on the shuffle.  Number one - I LOVE Train.  They have been one of my absolute favorite bands since high school (the other one is Nickelback).  I have, like, EVERYTHING they've ever done (okay, enough fangirling).  Anydangway - this song just seemed to resonate with my attitude about the Doctor at that point and I just got excited.  This song would make a great Doctor Who video!  The scenes started playing out in my head and I went crazy!

When I got to where I stay when I have class weekends, I stayed up late to map out how I wanted this video to go - a lot of what I wrote out made the final cut (0:15, 0:27, 1:16-1:27, 1:40-1:45, 1:46-1:54, 1:56-2:02 are some examples of this).  But then I got busy with life and other things and I just didn't do it.  Tonight was the first time I really felt like doing anything like this and I wasn't doing anything for anybody else, so I thought, why the heck not?

Making the video - it was intense.  I have a brand new appreciation for people that do this professionally.  Luckily, some things just fell right into place.  1:30 - that was a happy accident.  I credit the way the scenes in the show were laid out for a lot of these things.  1:46-1:54 - I wanted it focus on Tim finding the fob watch in that line, but the way it turned out was wonderful (again, credit to the original editing).  The last minute or so was just a ton of fun to put together because it was slower and I could have longer cuts.  From 3:01 to the end was kind of a pain because I wanted to find clips of the Doctor being badass and awesome, but I didn't want to go outside these two episodes for it.  But I managed to do it and I love the way it turned out.  And then the title card "bangs" in on the last note - I didn't plan that, but that's what happened.
